Buckle up, folks—because we’ve got a generational showdown happening on the nation’s highways. And for once, Gen Z isn’t pretending to be the best at something.
A new survey asked Americans which generation they think drives the safest. The surprise? Gen Z’ers themselves came in with the lowest self-confidence—only 30% said they believe their age group drives more safely than others. Now that’s what we call honest… if not exactly comforting.
Compare that to the other generations and you’ll see some serious confidence (or delusion):
- 43% of Millennials think they’re the safest drivers.
- 60% of Gen X’ers say the same.
- 63% of Baby Boomers believe they take the top prize. Though, let’s be real—some of those Boomers are pushing 80 and still can’t find the turn signal.
So what’s dragging Gen Z down the ranks? Distractions, distractions, distractions.
More than half (54%) admit to eating while driving, and 32% say they’ve driven while tired. 15% have argued mid-commute, and 13% even copped to driving with a pet on their lap—the highest numbers among all the generations surveyed.
Sure, every group has its highway horrors, but Gen Z’s behind-the-wheel multitasking game might be a bit too… spirited. Whether it’s juggling snacks, emotions, or pets, these young drivers are redefining the meaning of “hazardous.”
To their credit, they’re not in denial. But until they drop the road-trip snack trays and keep the Pomeranian out of the driver’s seat, it might be best to give Gen Z a wide berth at the next intersection.
